This past summer, the Village conducted a Special Census count which targeted growing areas in the community. Included in the count were some properties in and across from Seven Bridges, Walnut Court, Gallagher & Henry developments, and areas south of I-55. This targeted approach ensured that we only counted those areas where there was certain growth. Many communities use this approach because it helps to keep the Village’s costs low, while ensuring that growth is being captured.
The special census count revealed a 2,668 person increase in Woodridge’s population, bringing our population to 35,921. The next time of the population will be counted is in 2010 as a part of the decennial census.
One of the motivations for conducting a special census is to ensure that the Village is receiving its fair share of revenues from the State of Illinois. The Village receives about $135 per person per year in state shared revenues. If our population is undercounted, the Village must provide services to a larger population without the benefit of receiving a proportionate share of state revenues to support that population.
No additional special censuses will be conducted for Woodridge this decade as the Census Bureau will shut down the Special Census Office to gear up for the decennial count.
